Between 1853 and 1913, some 13 million British citizens left the land of their birth, bound mainly for North America, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Not only do more British live abroad than any other nationality, they are also more spread out.There are 41 countries with more than 10,000 British living there and another 71 countries with more than 1,000. There are 10,000 living part-time in Bulgaria.For 400 years until relatively recently, Britain was not an immigrant nation but an emigrant one. We now face by far the largest wave of immigration since 1066, even allowing for those who emigrate.
