Former citizens of sixteen different countries, ranging from Australia and Bulgaria to Uganda and the USA, took part in the first ever citizenship ceremony to be held at the Tower of London. Once the paperwork was completed, they reflected upon their reasons for taking the plunge and becoming British.Damien Tudjman, 35, a former resident of Sydney, Australia, has lived in the borough for the past seven and a half years. One young family, who became British citizens together, were Elmer Guzman, 35, his wife Flor Maria, 29 and their ten year old daughter, Daniela. The event, held nearly four years to the day since such ceremony took place in the UK, was arranged by Tower Hamlets Register Office. The Register Office regularly holds citizenship events at their Bow Road office. They also aim to encourage new citizens to think about their responsibilities and commitment to their community and the country as a whole.
