Cape Town resident Annette Carson, 65, is appealing a 2003 decision by the British Court of Appeal to dismiss her claim that the British Government had unlawfully discriminated against retired Britons living overseas. If the Lords fail, then the next step is an appeal to the European Union, and as all their members get an indexed pension no matter where they live, I cannot see how they will not grant one for the UK’s Expats. If they were living in Britain or a country with which Britain has modern bilateral agreements, they will receive £49 a week. Like more than half of the British pensioners living in Australia, John Redfern, 82, and wife Doreen, 84, depend on a means-tested Australian pension, costing the commonwealth government in excess of $106 million a year. She has condemned the frozen pension’s policy as "blatantly discriminatory" since it does not adversely affect British-aged pensioners who retire to most non-commonwealth nations, including European Union countries and the US. They receive the same regular cost-of-living increases as Britons who remain resident in the UK._________________Sydney Sue - Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened. When Mr Redfern retired 21 years ago, the couple began receiving a weekly pension of £27 ($66) from the British government. With no adjustments for inflation, they receive the same amount today.
