I wonder if anyone can please help with a question about moving to live in Bulgaria. I am a British citizen and have a full driving licence. ...

According to this article in the Sofia Echo http://sofiaecho.com/article/insight-driven-to-distraction/id_27850/catid_5to British EU licences are not recognised in Bulgaria. And I wonder why it is only UK licences out of all the other EU countries that are not recognised by the Bulgarian authorities? How did you get insurance in Bulgaria - can you buy and insure a car there without a Bulgarian licence? And we will sell our current car as we don't want a British right hand drive car in a left hand drive country. From other articles in the Echo it seems to be a test designed so that few if any can pass it. I am a British citizen and have a full driving licence. I am an Australian and have a long stay visa with a Bulgarian ID card, been 'pinged' a few times. I have two cars, both registered and insured in my name here and don't find any problemss with the system at all. I really don't fancy being without a car. I thought the way the article was worded it referred to people who already had a full licence not provisional licence holders. I usually manage to get away with a nice smile and claim to have been in the country less than a year but I think that in future once the traffic police become more informed and start clamping down then they may start asking for proof of that. I will perhaps seek your advice on the insurance front when we finally get moved! Is there anyone who is resident in Bulgaria as their main home, from Britain and who can advise as to whether or not to get a Bulgarian licence and so insure and run a car legally it is necessary to sit a Bulgarian driving test? I've been driving 29 years now and taking another test -0 well it seems a bit silly. Maybe I am just being a little over cautious but I don't want to get caught with no or invalid insurance. Never had an eyebrow raised by the plod at all. Or now that both countries are part of the EU, will my British licence be valid in Bulgaria. Some websites I have looked at say that after 12 months of living in Bulgaria I will need to take a test but others say that having a British EU licence is as valid in Bulgaria for just as long as a Bulgarian licence. When we move we won't have a British address so will have to do semething anyway about our current licences. Would I need to retake a driving test if I were to move to and live in Bulgaria?
